Red-shouldered Hawk

Buteo lineatus

Description:

Medium sized bird of prey with hooked beak. Has soft brown feathers and a speckled white underbelly. Unsure if this is a juvenile or adult as it does not appear to be able to fly just yet. Husband believes that it is a red shouldered hawk, but I don't know. I apologize for the picture quality. Was caught by surprise to see it sitting just outside the fence and all I had was my cell phone.

Habitat:

These birds appear to have set up their habitat in a rural area populated by both humans and many felines and canines. In our two yards alone, there are and have been 20+ kittens and puppies born. They appear to be the birds' choice prey as many disappear despite all our best efforts at concealing them.

Notes:

Happened to look out living room window and found bird sitting by fence. We have a lot of kittens and puppies between us and the neighbors but it did not appear to be hunting. Took picture from house. When I attempted to get closer, that is when bird "hopped" rather than flew to the tree it is now resting under. While taking video, a second raptor swooped down over the bird but it did not fly off. From the sounds heard in the tree, I am guessing that there is a third bird, perhaps a chick, in a nest. This is all in the neighbor's yard and they have a dog that does attack and bite--children and adults so I did not get any closer. The pic and video were taken with an iPhone 3GS so the quality is not great. The bird is still under the tree after approximately 20 minutes of elapsed time.
