Danaus plexippus
The Monarch Butterfly, is called the "King of Butterflies". Monarch Butterflies, are known for there mass migrations, which brings millions of them, to California and Mexico each winter, to roost. The Monarch Butterfly, is the only Butterfly, that makes this massive journey, of up to 3,000 miles long. The colors of the adults, are black, orange, and white. There distinctive color pattern, is a warning to predators, that they are poisonous and foul tasting. Both the adult Butterfly, and it's Caterpillar, are poisonous and foul tasting. They get these poisons, from the Caterpillar, when the Caterpillar is eating from it's host plant, the poisonous Milkweed plant. The Monarch Butterfly, is found throughout the United States, Mexico, and Canada. It's wingspan ranges from: 3.5 inches to 4.0 inches. The Caterpillars host plants, are from the many varieties of the Milkweed plant.
Agriculture fields, pasture fields, prairie remnants, urban and suburban residential areas, gardens, trees, and roadsides.
I found this beautiful green pupa, of the Monarch Butterfly, hanging from one of my Milkweed plants, that is growing on my back porch. I will put this Milkweed plant and pupa, inside a large fish tank, for protection. Now I will wait about 10 days, until a new, beautiful, Monarch Butterfly, will be born, inside this large fish tank. These are two photos, of the beautiful, green, Monarch Butterfly Pupa..
