Mareca penelope
European species of wigeon, this is a medium sized dabbling duck, of some 50 cm in length. The drake in breeding plumage (Pics N° 1 and 3) shows elegantly streaked grey and black back and wing covers. It sports a chestnut head with lighter stripe in the middle; pink breast, white belly and black tail. Female is mainly brown. Both sexes have a shiny silver-colored bill with a black tip.
The only couple of wigeons that day in a mixed waterfowl flock on Geneva (Leman) lake, near the Rousseau island, center. Urban.
