Great Blue Heron

Ardea Herodias

Description:

The Great Blue Heron is the largest and most widespread heron in North America. It is a large bird, with a slate-gray body, chestnut and black accents, and very long legs and an "S"-shaped neck. Great Blue Herons are very tall and stand 38-54 inches (97-137 cm).

Habitat:

Although found widely throughout North and Central America, the Caribbean, and the Galapagos Islands, this specimen was spotted at Parson's Beach Kennebunk, Maine. Parson's Beach allows a quaint salt water habitat where the ocean meets land. Directly of the beach is a set of saltmarshes and grasslands, where the Heron may stalk additional sources of prey, such as frogs and other mammals.
