Bamboo

Bambuseae

Description:

Bamboo in a residential yard. Grows very fast. Most people call it "cane" and cut it down if it appears in their yards, but if left alone it can reach a height of 20 feet or more. Bambuseae has about 92 genera and 5,000 species.

Thanks for the ID, Scott. I fell asleep reading about bamboo last night, even though it seemed unlikely. I thought it must be a similar plant, but not bamboo, not in a residential yard. We must all be very good at stomping it down before it reaches full height and sends out branches ... because it becomes very recognizable at that point. And I do see deliberately planted canebrakes in my area, but also mature cane that clearly wasn't planted. Interesting.

That's bamboo. It's an increasingly popular cash crop in Mississippi, and I think some species are becoming invasive. http://agfax-editors.com/2011/06/08/miss...
