Fringed Lichen

Anaptychia palmulata

Description:

Foliose lichen with dense, dark green center that looks like moss; thallus dark green-gray in center fading to a lighter gray at the margin. Apothecia prominent in center; persistent; dark brown with a jelly-like appearance. When the lichen dries, it lifts off the rock in sheets.

Habitat:

Growing on rock boulder on eastern-facing slope above lake shore; in predominantly deciduous woods.
