Brahminy Kite

Haliastur indus

Description:

White head, reddish-brown body.

Habitat:

The resort we stayed at, in Habanara, Sri Lanka, had a lake adjoining it. The shore was swampy and I had to rely on the zoom because I could not risk stepping into the squishy mud and treacherous vegetation. This Kite (and its partner) sat at on a tree at the other side of the lake. Suddenly it flew straight (it seemed) at me but halfway across the lake, it snatched a lizard or a fish and flew back to enjoy the meal. In the second shot you can see it is about to take flight. I was not fast enough to switch to video mode; by the time I did it was already having breakfast. However it was a wonderful experience to have seen it...as it approached I loved the graceful expanse of its wings and talons!
