Whimbrel

Numenius phaeopus

Description:

Large sandpiper as the members of families come, but medium-sized for Curlew genus - about 40cm tall grey brown bird with long green-greyish legs, and long and curved bill. By its appearance, it is uncomfortably close to Curlew; except for smaller stature and shorter bill... which does not help, since the length of both whimbrel's and curlew's bill can vary!

Habitat:

Observed during its wintering on coasts of Essaouira, Morocco, on rocky shores near the town center and fisherman port and market, totally surrounded by a huge, monstrous flock of Lesser black-backed gulls...

Notes:

Another lucky encounter and a 'lifer' for me taken back home from Morocco.
