Rustic Bunting

Emberiza rustica

Description:

Winter phase with white breast and streaks on neck and flanks. Light colored eyestripe, mustache and throat. Crest on the top of head. This is an extremely rare bird for California. Normally found in Asia and could get as far as Alaska. This bird has been at the same location for 3 months now.

Habitat:

Unknown bushes and Cypress trees

Notes:

Unusual relationship between this Rustic Bunting and the Dark-eye (Oregon)Juncos. Though there are small flocks of Sparrows nearby, the bunting prefers to stay with the Juncos. The most common routine I have seen is this bird will wait til the Juncos feeds and then joins them when it feels safe.
