Desert Bighorn Sheep

Ovis canadensis nelsoni

Description:

While rafting down the Colorado River through the Black Canyon, we spotted a small group of Bighorn Sheep, including a mother and calf, per the attached photos. The calf was very active, and curious...to the point of following us down the river for a few yards, and staring as we went by. The herds in this area are under pressure from a strain of pneumonia generally transmitted by domestic sheep and goats and usually fatal to bighorn, per the attached article. If not checked, herds are at risk. In this series, the mother is in the 2nd photo, calf in the 3rd, mother and calf in the 4th.

Habitat:

Desert, canyons, and mountainous areas in the Mojave Desert.
