I know this is some kind of loon.... but I don't know if it's a red throghted loon or a common. any ideas???
Hi Bird Nerd. Nice spotting. Both species are possible along the coast in Maine. The common loon is distinguished from the red-throated loon by size (its about 7 inches larger on average), and it has a much thicker bill. If you go to the link in the ID suggestion the All about birds page has similar species and you can compare the bill of the red-throated loon. I also think that in non-breeding plumage the Red-throated loon would have more white on its face, typically not covering the eye.
