In eclipse plumage - both adults look like female, but male has more rufous-tinged flanks and belly, darker head and retains pale blue forewing.
Breeds in shallow eutrophic lakes with rich vegeation, or marshes with sufficient open water.
Spotted in large shallow lake near salt pans.

They certainly can't be mistaken for anything else! Definitely duck season here.
No matter the plumage, the bill is distinctive. I'm ready to see some ducks!
