Black-tailed Skimmer

Orthetrum cancellatum

Description:

Body size approx 5 cm, and a wingspan some 8 cm. With age, adult males develop extensive blue pruinescence on their abdomens, leaving the black tip. Wings are clear with a black pterostigma. Females (ph n° 4) are less bold and not encountered as regularly - they have a yellow-brownish abdomen.

Habitat:

Black-tailed Skimmer is an Eurasian species, and is abundant throughout its range, making it one of the most commonly seen dragonflies. It is equally widespread in Mediterranean region. It is always found near any open water, but preferring slow-flowing streams, lakes and ponds, even marshes. Here, we observed it in many such locations in and around the Krka NP (Croatia). The park is in the place where river Krka forms a series of waterfalls and lakes; it is surrounded by a magnificent dense broad-leaved forest, and its shallow coastal waters are rich in vegetation.
