Southern Blue Ringed Octopus

Hapalochlaena maculosa

Description:

A young southern blue ringed octopus that dropped out of a shell that I had picked up off the beach and onto my foot. A neat but scary experience. This specimen was about 13 cm long from mantle to tip of tentacles.

Habitat:

A shell on a beach off of long reef.

Notes:

I quickly picked the octopus up with a flipper and carried it onto our boat. I then, once we were far enough offshore, gently let him back into the water and he swam out to the reef.
