Soldier Fly

Ptecticus sp.

Description:

An orange Soldier Fly with tinted wings, 1.4 cm in length. It has surprisingly short, round antennae. This might be P. trivittatus. Family Stratiomyidae, Subfamily Sarginae. This genus is primarily Old World, but many species are now known from the Americas. This is a compost breeding fly.

Habitat:

Garden lights, semi-rural residential area, San Cristobal de Las Casas, Chiapas, Mexico, 2,200 meters.
