False Turkey Tail

Stereum ostrea

Description:

Undersurface was smooth, without visible pores, and a light color if I remember correctly. The fungus was rigid.

Habitat:

Decaying a tree alongside the Lower Rouge river in Michigan.

Notes:

True turkey tail is edible, so it's good to be able to distinguish the two. This, false turkey tail, is rigid with a smooth under surface. True turkey tail is flexible, and has pores on its underside.
