Mycena ura
Small bright crimson mushroom. Cap approx. 6mm but can range from 3-20mm depending on age. Bell shaped cap and darker red in the centre with paler striations. Stem dark crimson and these were about 50mm high. Growing is small groups of two to eight bodies.
Growing on dead wood in native forest close to Lake Karapiro in the central North Island of New Zealand.
The name 'ura' celebrates this mushrooms bright colour. 'Ura' is the Maori name for the colour of pohutukawa flowers. (A native tree that flowers around Christmas time in NZ.) If the stem is cut, this fungus bleeds red sap. It has also been known as Mycena miniata in New Zealand just to confuse things more!
