Red-shouldered Hawk

Buteo lineatus

Description:

This hawk has dark-and-white checkered wings and warm reddish barring on the breast. The tail is black with narrow white bands. Florida birds are very pale, particularly on head and breast.

Habitat:

Suburban areas where houses or other buildings are mixed into woodlands.

Notes:

This is a bird seen and heard a lot in the area. Locating it is not hard but by listening for the call you have to be careful since the Blue jays have become real talented at mimicking hawk calls.
