Small-spotted catshark

Scyliorhinus canicula

Description:

This is one of the smallest and most common sharks in Europe. However it's rarely seen by divers as overfishing as rendered them rare above 50 meters deep. In this particular spot off Cascais they can be seen in large numbers at approximately 25 meters deep. Some divers are petitioning the authorities to protect this area so it can only be used for recreational diving. Recent studies have shown the benefits for the local economy of protecting sharks for diving tourism range from 60.000 to 150.000 times more than fishing.

Notes:

25 meters deep
