Buteo jamaicensis
The red-tail hawk is a large hawk, and overall its body is heavier than other buteos. It is usually a chocolate brown across its back and wings. The underside is white to creamy ivory. There is a brown bar across the chest, making it easy to identify as a red-tail hawk.
It prefers countryside with open pastures intersected with woods, bluffs, and streamside trees. It lives throughout the continent except on tundra or in broken forest.
