Giant Leopard Moth caterpillar

Ecpantheria scribonia

Description:

A black caterpillar hanging on a twig. It was wiggling upside down so much; when it was done moving, it was hanging perfectly vertically by the twig.

Habitat:

Temperate forest.

Notes:

Looks like it was preparing to pupate (make a chrysalis).
