Moth

Sarbanissa venosa

Description:

Fluffy tufts on leg. Peculiar threadlike things on the dark coloured body. Large moth. Strong flier.

Habitat:

On a tree on the elevated embankment alongside the River Matla (Sunderbans area). This is a truly rural setting. Fertile alluvial soil means lush vegetation. Tidal movement of water means lots of ponds all around. Nothing here except fishing village ... and Mother Nature. I called out to my friend and she said, "It is dead,' and gave it a poke; whereupon there was a flash of bright yellow wings and the moth was invisible in the weedy undergrowth!

Notes:

Absolutely no idea about ID. PLEASE Help. 2nd shot is habitat shot. Also : http://www.phuketnaturetours.com/Pages/t...

Thank you Leuba,
The habitat is so far removed from my urban existence that it was like a new world altogether. There are fishing villages within strolling distances...so I am not sure about the officially " protected area" bit. But here's hoping.

A very attractive moth indeed Sukanya and I love the habitat. I hope it's protected.

Thank you so MUCH arne.roysland. It is wonderful to give this strange-looking moth its name.
