Ornate Hawk-eagle

Spizaetus ornatus

Description:

It is a medium to large raptor between 60 and 70 cm in length, and a weight of around 1.6 kg. It has a dark brown back and satin black wings; the underparts mottled, in thick black and white bands; a pair of black "whiskers", and a black crest that stands tall when aroused. The legs are strong and leathery, with claws of considerable size, feathered up to the torso. long bill and amber eyes framed by deep brow ridges. The specimen of my photo, lives in a forest with alterations, which surely goes up to primary forests; But to feed the young, they go out to the nearby farms and hunt chickens, the farm keepers have collected money from visitors, to pay the farm owners for the chickens they have lost and prevent them from hunting the Spizaetus.

Habitat:

Primary rainforest.

Notes:

Considered near threatened ( IUCN ) The fifth photo shows the female bringing in, more nesting material, even though there is already a chick in the nest, perhaps because the branches have fallen or as a way to protect the young as it grows.
