Four-spotted Skimmer

Libellula quadrimaculata

Description:

A gorgeous honeycomb-colored, medium-sized Dragonfly

Habitat:

Off the trails in taller grasses and reeds throughout Glendalough State Park, Minnesota. Spotted fairly heavily for a 7-10 days periods and then, nothing.

Notes:

Some of the dragonflies I photographed this past summer/fall would fly away at my approach, some would stand their ground (perch) and some would actually fly from their perch to me and then back again, occasionally tapping me on the head or shoulder as if "counting coup". I never knew if they were being aggressive or if they liked me and were sizing me up. I also ended up with dragonflies catching and eating horseflies that were buzzing my head looking for a way into my bee costume. After which, they moved up from affection to love on my heart rating scale. I also saw them eating on Lady Bugs, Damselflies and flies in general.
