Wow, thanks for the great info Karen. A friend and I came upon a carcass once engulfed in butterflies, we joked at the time they had brought the fox down. :)

He was mud puddling - male butterflies will visit mud, rotting fruit, rotting corpses of other organisms, urine & feces for nutrients they can't get from nectar alone http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mud-puddlin...
