Texas Horned Lizard

Phrynosoma cornutum

Description:

Spiny lizard that specializes on eating harvester ants. This one was in shed and about 4 inches long.

Habitat:

Short-grass prairie

Notes:

We rescued this horned lizard from inside a cattle guard that does not have any escape route. It is a deep box that traps may animals although I do suspect that the local raccoons, skunks, and weasels all use the cattle guard as a source of food every now and again.
