American Coot

Fulica americana

Description:

Healthy coots enjoying some preen time. Distinct bill markings, two-toned black body, red eyes, and yellow-green toes give them a unique look.

Habitat:

Small pond with vegetation for eating and sleeping.

Notes:

I have heard them referred to as a Nerf football with feet! SO comical in their actions, preferring solitary existence from observing. They will make such a fuss around food and chase another coot off, only to discover their food has been taken when they return. Their toes are weird, I love them!
