Sphinx Moth Cocoon

Description:

Family: Sphingidae, Subfamily: Sphinginae. 2 inches in length (5. cm). Brown, tan with black dots. Still moving when I arrived to pick up the cocoon. A tentative ID was given for Achemon Sphinx Moth cocoon (Eumorpha achemon) however, since this is an uncommon moth in my area I put only Sphinx Moth cocoon until I can get absolute confirmation.

Habitat:

Near woodlands, but found in the open on his stone deck.

Notes:

Special thanks to my neighbor and his dog who spotted this cocoon for me. I will have to wait until spring to see what it is.

I think I found the ID. A common small Sphinx Moth called White-Lined Sphinx (Hyles lineata) Tell me what you think. Thanks!
