Praying Mantis

Stagmomantis carolina

Description:

This little fellow Dropped in on me....literally. It jumped off the garage roof and landed in a little tree. His wings were dark and transparent, which I thought was odd. Most of the ones I have seen before were all green. This one was all brown. He or she posed for pictures for quite a while. Have a few more to add....keep watching!

Great series! The reason this one looked different is because he's a different species. This fine fellow is a native species, Stagmomantis carolina, and a male. They look quite different than Mantis religiosa (by mantis standards). I'd rather find one of these any day than an introduced species!

Here is another one that looks like yours:

praying you won't whack him?.. mantids often come in green forms with occasional brown ones.. usually about 80% and 20% from memory.. at least that's what ours do... nice shots!
