Horse Nettle

Solanum carolinense

Description:

A low-growing variety of fruiting thistle. The foliage is coloring and dying back in preparation for fall.

Habitat:

Pastureland fence.

Notes:

I have another picture of a star thistle in bloom. The plant size and the leaf shape are very similar. Is it possible that these are the same plant?

Good to know. Is it poisonous then (to people or cattle)?

They are indeed the same plant, and it is neither a nettle or thistle but a member of the nightshade family.
