Description:

Orange, pungent fungus with insects crawling all over it. The mushroom caps were slimy. The entire growth was about a foot in diameter.

Habitat:

Grassy forest near a riverbank.

Definitely way past their prime. The ones I spotted didn't smell and weren't slimy. Still cool to run across a big clump like this, thanks for the adding the link.

Maybe something like this: http://www.mushroomexpert.com/omphalotus... . The reason it smells so bad might that they have gone off a bit?

Definitely not a chanterelle; chantrelles do not have true gills
