Nootka Lupin

Lupinus nootkatensis

Description:

A member of the pea family, very robust plant. Has long, upright stalks where the oddly shaped purple and white flowers grow from. It was introduced to Iceland some time ago to help with soil fertilisation (this plant has rhizomes which help fix atmospheric nitrogen into nitrates, a nutrient that plants need to grow). Has "hand-shaped" leaves (pic 3). Found it pretty much everywhere, especially at roadsides.

Habitat:

Excels at growing in poor soils because of its ability to fix nitrogen, I found this plant growing everywhere. The plants in this picture were found by the docks at Keflavik, Iceland.

Notes:

While these plants grew everywhere, I rarely got a chance to get close to them as we mainly saw them by roadsides while we were driving around. This wasn't the best example of this plant, but it was the only chance I got to document it!
