Long-Horned Flower Beetle

Ochraethes obliquus

Description:

This little cerambycid only emerges in October and November when these wild yellow composites are blooming in San Cristobal, altitude 2,200 m. The beetles are colored to cryptically blend with the centers of the flowers and are very difficult to see. They fly rapidly when disturbed. Females are about 1 cm in length, the males are smaller. This specimen is a female.

Habitat:

Semi-urban area where the composites bloom in great numbers in empty lots. The plant grows as high as 2 meters.
