Coconut Rhinoceros Beetle

Oryctes rhinocerus

Description:

Female rhinoceros beetle. Large black beetle with high shrill when disturbed.

Habitat:

Coconut palm groves. However this one was found on the branches of a citrus tree.

Notes:

The rhinoceros beetle is a large black beetle that is considered as a major pest throughout the South Pacific due to the damage it causes to coconut palms. When photographed closeup the reflective quality of their pitted shells are clearly shown which is why this sample appears green rather than black.
