Zebra Longwing

Heliconius charitonia

Description:

Family: Nymphalidae Subfamily: Heliconiinae Wings are black, long and narrow, with thin yellow stripes. I noticed four small red spots on upper wings.

Habitat:

Host plant: Passion-vines Habitat: Tropical hammocks, moist forests, edges, fields. Spends little time in full sun.

Notes:

I saw this female laying eggs on my Purple Passion-vine and immediately grabbed my camera. The Zebra Longwing is slower moving and very graceful. I observed her flying all around the passion-vine laying a grouping of eggs on the same set of new growth leaves.
