Hairy woodpecker

Leuconotopicus villosus

Description:

This was a mating pair building a cavity nest in a rotten tree. They appeared to take turns making the cavity then gathering the excess and tossing it out with their bills (pics 1 and 2). The male has a red spot on the back of the head. Pic 5 shows them mating which lasted for about 5 seconds. I probably took 20 pics that spanned over a 15 minute period.

Habitat:

Spotted in a wetland at Flaming Geyser State Park.

Great series, Brian. I loved the shot where the bits of wood chipped away were flying away...could just imagine the speed at which the beak was working!

Thank you, Neil. It was a fun observation. I'll keep going back to check their progress as this park is only a half hour from where I live.
