Case-bearing leaf beetle

Aporocera melanocephala

Description:

A small beetle about 8 mm long, with bright yellow pronotum and elytra which were covered with small black markings. Elytra were short, exposing thick pale yellow abdominal segments. Legs were black as were the long antennae. Antennae segments were 9 + scape.

Habitat:

Spotted on under-storey bushes and on grass. Saw a couple on Elderberry Panax (Polyscias sambucifolia) which was growing in abundance in this area.

Very attractive little beetle with amazingly long, straight antennae. I saw at least four of them in a variety of plants at this small reserve at Gembrook. They drop off the plant at the slightest disturbance.
