Tufted Vetch

Vicia cracca

Description:

A meadow plant that can grow in poor soils due to its ability to turn atmospheric nitrogen into nitrates, an important nutrient that plants need to grow. Has clusters of beautiful purple flowers, and the typical creeping, vine-like appearance of the vetches. Whenever I found these, they were in great numbers.

Habitat:

Grows mainly on meadows and roadsides, I saw these mainly in meadowy areas. These pictures were taken by the docks at Keflavik, Iceland.

Notes:

Large clusters of these grew all around Iceland, very pretty purple flowers. Looks similar to a rarer species, the bush vetch, but I didn't see any of that.
