I spotted this fungus on the side of a rotting tree trunk. I took a macro of the string that appears to be coming out of it.
Deciduous woods -- mostly maple.

I know! If it's not spores of some kind, then I think it might be parasite damage? I'm hoping someone out there know what the deal is.
