Dusky Moorhen (chicks)

Gallinula tenebrosa

Description:

A little group of Dusky Moorhen chicks, swimming with confidence amongst the adults. On a couple of occasions I moved in too close, and they gave a little alarm call. I've seen nesting chicks in the past, also at this location, but always from a distance. I was really happy today to have a better view. The last photo in this series shows an Eastern Water Dragon (Intellagama lesueurii lesueurii) with the birds. Both species seem to live harmoniously side-by-side, but I'm sure that, on occasion, the odd chick is taken, although these chicks were probably too large for that to occur.

Habitat:

Spotted by the pond at the Mt. Coot-tha Botanical Gardens in Brisbane QLD. The nest was located in a bamboo grove near waters edge.
