Common wombat

Vombatus ursinus

Description:

Common wombats are sturdy and built close to the ground. When fully grown they can reach anywhere between 80 and 130cm, and between 17 and 40kg. The wombats found on Tasmania and Flinders Island are often smaller than their mainland counterparts. It is distinguished from both Hairy-nosed wombats by the fact that it has a bald nose.

Habitat:

Marsupial lawn in the old convict settlement ruins at Maria Island National Park.

Notes:

Wombats have very poor eyesight and this young wombat was walking directly at me when it finally heard the noise from my camera and went darting back to its mother.

We were treated to a great deal of wombat cuteness this weekend, misako, ForestDragon, martinl. Martin, I have it on good authority (wildlife careers), that they get nasty at this age, biting and clawing.
