Sherman's Fox Squirrel

Sciurus niger shermani

Description:

Big squirrel! Very different from the Fox squirrels I grew up with in Michigan , that were uniformly reddish brown. These were grizzly brown and had black faces with a white nose, and a luxuriously long bushy tail. Definitely a tail to be proud of! . Not terribly shy- this one peered down at me from about 10" up a long-leaf pine tree in Wekiva State Park. Waited very patiently while I fumbled with my camera .

Habitat:

Pine sandhill , Wekiva State Park, Apopka Flda.

Notes:

A particularly striking squirrel. Endemic to Florida.
