Selasphorus sasin
From 8-9:30pm these two hummers were flying around our porch light, looked like they were catching small bugs (i could not see them). This morning when i opened my front door one of them was sitting on the ground (all most stepped on it) Not sure what happened to it, I thought he over did it eating bugs and was hung over. After a while and a phone call to Project Wildlife I took him for help at their triage center in San Diego. The other weird thing was the neighbor had trimmed the honeysuckle hedge on her side earlier that day. I did not know hummers eat bugs at night? I wonder why one ended up on the ground the next morning?

Yes, please let us know how the hummer is! Usually rehabers have you fill out a form and ask if you want to be contacted for release. Did they say that the hummer would be released in your area? Usually they do release them in your area. That is if the hummer survived. I'm sure you can call and find out if you'd like to know. Do you tell them it was with a mate? Is the mate still there? They should be reunited if that hummer recovers.
I agree with luvnature, if the hummer was catching insects at night it could have easily run into a nearby window and injured itself. Imagine hitting a wall at those speeds and with a bill that long. I imagine I'd be stunned for a while too. Beautiful pictures, and I too hope for the hummer's full recovery!
The one you found on the ground probably ran into your window or something. I found one like this and after some time it recovered from the shock and flew off without any problems. I was in my car ready to take it somewhere when this happened. But, before I could leave, it started flying. So, I stopped and let it out.
Thanks for the excellent story. The honeysuckle bush should not have been trimmed. Hope he recovers.
