Velleda Lappet Moth

Tolype velleda

Description:

extremely long hair on legs and head, wingspan is 32–58 mm

Habitat:

Carolinian forest

Notes:

I spotted this moth walking the woodland trail in Point Peelee national park. I was surprised I even saw it. The moth pooped shortly after I noticed it, in the form of 3 or 4 dark brown drops. One of the coolest moths I've seen in Canada. It made my day seeing this.

Thanks Dan!!! I received your moth at my light tonight. That was quick. Only took 3 days to fly to PA. I just took some photos of this awesome moth just now. Way too cool! (But your moth looks better on the tree than on the house.)

Thanks Carol and Yuko. This moth is probably hairier than a lot of cats! Carol, if you haven't seen it, it must be rare then!

It's so furry that it almost looks like my cat (seriously!). I wish I could see this moth in person. Great series!

Really great and fuzzy! Excellent moth! I have never seen that one in my area yet. But have to wait until next year.
