Description:

A weed with lovely flowers growing along a fence beside a fairly busy road. Commonly known as Cobbler's Pegs or Spanish Needle, this is a species in the plant family Asteraceae. It is an annual that grows up to about 1 meter in height, depending on the local conditions. This plant is considered a weed in some tropical habitats. However, in some parts of the world it is a source of food or medicine. For example, in sub-Saharan Africa, the tender shoots and young leaves are used fresh or dried as a leaf vegetable, particularly in times of scarcity.
