Black-Eyed Hermit

Pagurus armatus

Description:

I've been focusing on the smaller creatures in the ocean recently and its amazing what colors you can find. With the color loss and light bending it's hard to notice colors until you add light. The video is of two other Hermit Crabs checking out a vacant shell.

Habitat:

Alaska to Southern California - sandy bottoms in sheltered areas - low intertidal

Notes:

- one of the largest hermit crabs - easily found in the Puget Sound area - loves Moon shells for homes

Thanks Mark. I'll have to watch it, very interested. I use a point and shoot so it does some funny things trying to adjust color, light, focus, ect. I would love to purchase a housing for my SLR but unfortunately they cost as much as the camera setup!

Good job! Fabulous crabs. It must be tricky underwater. I just watched a short doco about the guy that's re-working lenses for underwater (as used in UK Olympics) so I know it's not just about colour down there. http://www.abc.net.au/catalyst/stories/3...
