Arizona toad

Anaxyrus microscaphus

Description:

Small toad, about 2 inches across, hiding in a crevice in a basalt cliff face above Little Colorado River near Springerville, Arizona.

Habitat:

Crevice in basalt cliffs formed by lava flow from shield volcano north of Mogollon Rim in Arizona. Near upper Little Colorado River, at around 7000 feet elevation. During summer monsoon rainy season.

Notes:

I discovered this critter while climbing inside an ancient staircase at Casa Malpais Pueblo--prehistoric Indian ruin outside Springerville, Arizona. I put my fingers into one of the handholds, and quickly withdrew my hand when I felt something cold and squishy. i'm just guessing at the identification, based on habitat.
