Dissosteira carolina
The Carolina Grasshopper (Dissosteira carolina) is abundant across the U.S. and southern Canada. In flight, these large insects may be mistaken for Mourning Cloak butterflies. Males perform sustained, hovering courtship flights that attract rival males as well as females. Look for this species in all habitats, including roadsides, vacant lots, and gravel quarries.
