Common Pied Oystercatcher

Haematopus ostralegus

Description:

Striking, black-and-white wading bird with a bright orange bill and red rim around the eyes. In Europe, cannot be mistaken for anything else. In this area of Iceland, the oystercatchers will be all-year residents, and don't migrate to Britain and other areas of Europe, as most Iceland-dwelling waders do.

Habitat:

Was wading along a sandy/gravelly beach in Reykjavik near the Videy ferry terminal

Notes:

I only took this one picture of this oystercatcher... they're handsome birds, but there are lots of these guys that live on the river behind my flat so I see them all the time! Plus there was a ringed plover scuttling around (which I get to see less in the UK) that took most of my attention. He had some beautiful scenery behind him though :)
