Fallow Deer

Dama dama

Description:

Feral Fallow Deer roam the hills and gullies of national parks and farmland. Herd consists of bucks, does and fawns at varying ages. These were mostly of the common colour (brown, mottled white, some spotting on back and sides), but also some of the Menil type (more spotted coats all year round, lack of black on tail), lighter belly and inside legs, males sporting antlers, height at shoulder almost 1m, fast, agile, grazer. Originally from Europe.

Habitat:

Open and closed forest types in Australia, these ones on dry open grasslands, farmlands and Cypress scrub country in nearby hills.

Notes:

Released and escaped deer of many species inhabit the Australian countryside and cause environmental and economical damage as many feral species do. Although not native to this country they still present a majestic sight in early morning light against the blue mountain backdrop.
